If you can use the sun to your advantage, you have a compass. Better then a sloppy clay one and faster than a normal one. (Tip: if the sun is rising, point the shadow of the green stick towards the white dot to the left of the orange dot. If the sun is setting, the one to the right of the orange dot. Orange is north!)
